Yet another IIT student commits suicide, 2nd case in the year

In a tragic incident, a second-semester student of the Indian Institute of Guwahati (IITG) was found dead in her hostel room on Friday.

“We have received a call from IIT Guwahati that a girl was found hanging at Disang Hostel at around 10.30 am. We rushed to the spot and recovered the body. It will be sent for postmortem tomorrow,” said a senior police official.

The girl identified as Somia hails from Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh. She was studying the second semester of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the IITG.

The family members of the girl will arrive here on Saturday.

This the second suicide death in the IITG in this year. Earlier on April 11, one Ranjan Bhuyan died by suicide inside his room at the Dihing Hostel.

An official release of IITG stated: “It is with profound regret that IIT Guwahati reports the tragic death of a female student on campus on August 9. The matter is being investigated by the police authorities.”

“The student’s immediate family has been informed, and the Institute is providing them full support during this difficult time,” it added.
