World Tuberculosis Day Observed in Jowai
JOWAI: World Tuberculosis Day is being observed every year worldwide on 24th March being a Sunday, the District Medical & Health Officer, West Jaintia Hills and District Tuberculosis Society, Jaintia Hills, Jowai observed the day in Jowai today at District Library, Mynthong, Jowai with the theme, “It’s Time to End TB”.
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Smt. D.D Syngai, MCS, Extra Assistant Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District said the day is being observed every year to remind each and every individual that we are not yet free from this deadly disease and we need to join hands and have a responsibility creating awareness among the public about the dreadful disease as many people all over the world are still ignorant and fall prey to this fatal disease. Stressing on the theme, ‘It’s Time to End TB’ Syngai said each one of us have to move out, play our part actively to help prevent the spread of the disease instead of depending on the Health Department and Government solely.
Lauding the Health Department for countless effort to make the district a free TB Disease, she urge and exhort the District Tuberculosis office to generate more awareness programme maybe through the Social media and other forms of media communication generating maximum awareness to the masses.
Dr. EBV Laloo, District Tuberculosis Officer cum Member Secretary DTS, Jaintia Hills in her introductory stress on the Theme ‘Its Time’, working to eradicate the dreadful disease from the society and globally.
Dr. I. Khyriem, Medical Officer TB Control DTS, West Jaintia Hills District elaborated on the signs and symptoms and the two types of TB, the pulmonary Tuberculosis which affects the lungs and is contagious and the extra pulmonary TB. She further informed that the office has and is conducting various activities to eliminate and curb this fatal disease in the District, through the activities conducted they identified that the TB cases have gone down at Amlarem C& RD and Block Saipung C&RD Block.
Dr. J.N Shullai, Director MCSWA, I/C TB-HIV spoke on the 99 DOTS scheme for HIV patients affected with TB.
Earlier, a Rally was flagged off from Marian Hills Playground where students from different schools of Jowai took part carrying posters to spread awareness.
The programme was chaired by Dr. E.Challam, Additional District Medical & Health Officer, Jowai while the welcome address was delivered by Dr. D.P Warbah, I/C RNTCP, Dr. Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai and Smt. Y. Pakma, Lab Technician DTC offered the Vote of thanks.
