World No Tobacco Day celebrated
JOWAI: To raise awareness on the harmful effect of Tobacco the office of the District Legal Service Authority, West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with the office of the District Medical and Health Officer, West Jaintia Hills today conducted a Mass awareness campaign rally at Ummulong stand, Iawmusiang, Jowai followed by a rally from Iawmusiang to Ladthadlaboh. Along with the officers from various departments, participating Students displayed anti tobacco slogan on placards. Leading in the pledge reading, Lakador Syiem,MPS, Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills urge everyone to live up to pledge taken, he also advice the students and youths to keep themselves away from tobacco and from any form of tobacco products.
Dr. Arlangki Hinge, Medical Specialist, Jowai Civil Hospital, Ialong, Dr. EVB Laloo, District Tuberculosis Officer and DS Marbaniang, Secretary of District Legal Service Authority, West Jaintia Hills spoke on the ill effects of tobacco, highlighting the health risk associated and on the legal implication to reduce its consumption.
The Students from Thomas Jones Drama club, Jowai presented a skit highlighting the outcome that comes along with the consumption of tobacco.
District Session Judge West Jaintia Hills E Kharumnuid, Dr. KC Ajar,District Medical and Health Officer, Jowai, actively participated in the campaign.
The porgramme was chaired by Dr. Helen Uriah, Nodal Officer, NPCDCS, and WJHs. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Regina Talang, Nodal Offcier, NTCP, WJHs and the vote of thanks was offered by Smt. Y. Shylla, Member of the District Legal Services Authority, WJHs.
Prize were also given to participating schools, the first prize was given to St. Mary Mazzarelo higher Secondary School, Jowai, second to Seinraij Higher Secondary School and third prize to Jowai Public School.
