USTM presents D Litt to Zubeen Garg, Lou Majaw at 10th convocation
The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Tuesday conferred DLitt degrees to two cultural icons of Assam and Meghalaya – Zubeen Garg and Lou Majaw for their outstanding contribution in the field of art and culture, outreach activities, peace, harmony, and development of society on the occasion of the 10th convocation of the university.
Accepting the Honorary Doctorate, Assam’s heartthrob and singing sensation Zubeen Garg said, “Thank you very much USTM for this honour. I never thought that I would get a doctorate in my life because I was a college dropout. It’s good to have a doctorate degree without being a graduate.”
“Actually, we are dream chasers and I chased my dream and whatever I am now, it is because of the people”. He urged the students to rise, shine and go ahead for a bright future,” Garg said.
A multi-talented artist, Zubeen Garg is a singer, music director, composer, lyricist, music producer, actor, film director, film producer, scriptwriter and philanthropist. His contributions are mostly attributed in Assamese, Bengali and Bollywood music and films.
Popularly known as the Bob Dylan of India, Lou Majaw isn’t just a singer he is a storyteller, a social commentator, and a cultural icon whose powerful voice and lyrics resonate with a generation weaving tales of love, loss, and the Khasi way of living.
The convocation was conducted in the presence of a galaxy of Vice Chancellors, academicians, and other eminent personalities.
Altogether 1,639 graduates were awarded degrees, out of which 17 scholars were awarded PhD degrees, 906 students were awarded Post Graduate degrees, and 716 students were awarded Undergraduate degrees.
The Convocation began with the grand and elegant Academic Procession which was participated by the Registrar of the University, Academic Council members, members of the Board of Governors, Deans of different schools, Heads of different Departments, and the Award recipients.
The convocation came to a close with the administration of oath and the singing of the National Anthem.
