Umkiang village demands upgradation of PHC to CHC
The village dorbar of Umkiang in East Jaintia Hills district on Wednesday sought the intervention of the Health Minister James K Sangma for upgradation of the Umkiang Primary Health Centre (PHC) to a Community Health Centre (CHC).
“Umkiang PHC has been in operation for a very long time and it is high time that the PHC be upgraded to a CHC for the benefits of the border population. The village sincerely hopes that the government will explore the possibilities and to take steps for up-gradation of Umkiang PHC to a CHC for the larger public interest,” Assistant Waheh Shnong Kynjaimon Amse said in a memorandum to Sangma.
He informed that at present the Umkiang PHC caters to more than 16 villages having more than 15000 population and it is the only health care centre in the border areas catering to the medical needs of the people.
He also asserted that there is a need to increase the manpower and medical staff in the PHC besides making several other facilities to cater to the needs of the people so as to ease the problems of the people who have to travel to the cities for different types of tests.
Amse further stated that many facilities will be made available to the people if the Umkiang PHC is upgraded to a CHC and this will help the people to a very large extent not only of the people of Umkiang village and all the people within the bounds of Umkiang PHC.
There is an urgent need to revamp the health infrastructure so as to enable the people to attain and receive the best possible health services and thereby reducing the pressure of going to the cities for health care.
“It is thus urged and requested that the Umkiang PHC be upgraded to CHC so as better services and more types of facilities will be made available to the public. The village assures you support on this matter,” the assistant headman of the village said.
