Tynsong terms protest by MLA a political drama

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday referred the protest staged by the KHNAM legislator Adelbert Nongrum as a “political drama”.

“It is just a political drama which I personally feel is not fair at all,” Tynsong told reporters.

Nongrum has decided to boycott the Meghalaya day celebrations by staging a five-day sit-in-demonstration as a mark of protest against the government’s failure to address the five point charter of demands.

These include the need for the government to review the state job reservation policy, relaxing the upper age limit for recruitment to government services, creation of a separate state cadre, relocation of the Sweepers’ Colony and resolving the long pending boundary dispute.  

Tynsong said that the state government has already taken initiatives with regards to all the issues raised by the agitating legislator.

“However, if you expect it can be done tomorrow or day after tomorrow, I think nobody can just give you assurance like that but we are working on it on a war footing as we are serious about it and I think the people also know that,” he added.

When asked, Tynsong said the state cabinet will soon take a final decision on the demand for relaxing the upper age limit for recruitment to government jobs.

“Very soon, we are going to sit down and from the officers’ level they will do their detailed polishing and once that is done will take a call in the next cabinet,” he assured.

He further stated that the government is committed to pursue with the Centre for immediate implementation of the ILP even as he added that steps are on to relocate the Sweepers’ Colony from Them Iew Mawlong.
