Teinwell and Latiplang files nomination for CEM’s post in KHADC
SHILLONG: Election to the post of the chief executive member in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) will be held on Friday, following the collapse of Teinwell Dkhar-led executive committee after it failed to survive the No-trust motion due to cross voting.
Dkhar of the UDP was again nominated as the CEM candidate by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and he will be contesting against the Independent member and leader of the newly formed United Democratic Forum (UDF), Latiplang Kharkongor.
Both Dkhar and Kharkongor were elected for the four consecutive times from Shella constituency and Nongthymmai constituency respectively during the KHADC elections held earlier this year.
Nomination papers filed by the candidates on Thursday were found valid after scrutiny and the stage is set for tomorrow’s election, an official of the Council informed here.
The UDF is having the support of 15 members which include 9 Congress, 3 National People’s Party (NPP), 2 Independents and 1 People’s Democratic Front (PDF).
The UDA however is now comprised of 7 United Democratic Party (UDP), 4 NPP, 2 Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and 1 Independent after its strength was reduced from 18 to 14.
The KHADC has 29 members at present following the demise of sitting member from Langrin Constiuency, Nasar Marweiñ recently.
After filing their nomination papers, both the candidates have expressed confidence to win the CEM’s post.
While Kharkongor claimed that all the 15 members of the UDF are intact, Dkhar however maintained anything can happen in politics and the UDA will not surrender so easily but will fight back to re-constitute the executive committee in the floor of the House.
Meanwhile, the political development in the KHADC has brought a split among the NPP MDCs when Chairman of the Council Pynshngain N Syiem decided to support the No-confidence motion moved by the Congress against UDA-led EC during the ongoing winter session of the KHADC.
Although Syiem, an NPP MDC from Pynthorumkhrah defended that his action cannot be taken as anti-party activity, NPP state chief Dr WR Kharlukhi however made it clear that disciplinary action will taken against desserters.
The other two NPP MDCs which supported the NC against UDA led by the UDP include deputy chairman Alvin Khyriem Sawkmie (Mawsynram) and executive member Mitchel Wankhar (Laban).
