    All works and no play make Jack a dull boy or in other words all study and no play make the children dull students but this will no longer be the case in the State of Meghalaya as the Meghalaya Education Department has decided to introduce ten bagless days throughout the academic session for students from Class VI to Class XII where students will come to school without their bags and shall be engaged in various co-curricular activities.

    This decision was informed to all schools in Meghalaya by the Education Department vide its notification released on December 20, 2024.

    According to the notification, the schools will carry on Kitchen Gardening & Plantation on Bagless Day 1 followed by Career Counselling on Bagless Day 2. On Bagless Day 3, the schools will conduct tourism-related projects and activities, and on Bagless Day 4, there will be a School Beautification and Cleaning Drive. On Bagless Day 5, it will be Library and Reading Day.

    The Education Department directed the schools to carry out Environmental Awareness and Eco Club Activities on Bagless Day 6, while the observation of Health and Nutrition Day, and Life Skills Day, will be on Bagless Day 7 and Bagless Day 8, respectively. Additionally, Music, Art & Culture activities will be conducted on Bagless Day 9, and Sports and Games Activities on Bagless Day 10.

    Meghalaya mandated schools to seek Govt approval before declaration of holidays

    Meanwhile, the notification directed the Govt Lower Primary Schools to conduct classes for four hours from 9 AM to 1 PM, while the Govt Upper Primary Schools will hold classes for five hours from 9 AM to 2 PM. The Govt Secondary Schools will conduct classes for six hours from 9 AM to 3 PM, and Govt Higher Secondary Schools will function for seven hours from 9 AM to 4 PM.

    The notification also advised all other schools to schedule in a similar way and as per RTE norms while schools located in Shillong & Tura which have been advised by their respective District Administration on staggered timings, shall intimate the same to the Director of School Education & Literacy.
