Meghalaya mandated schools to seek Govt approval before declaration of holidays
In order to curb the random declaration of holidays by various school authorities in Meghalaya, the State Education Department has mandated all schools in the State to obtain official approval before declaration of any holidays in their respective schools and also to adhere with holidays list official declared by the Meghalaya Government recently.
The direction was issued by the Education Department in its notification released on Friday last week.
The notification notified that 10 February, 2025 as the start of the academic session while the Meghalaya Class Readiness Programme is scheduled from 10th February 2025 to 7th March, 2025 for Class I to V and from 10th February 2025 to 28th February 2025 for Class VI to X.
The conduct of the Half Yearly Examination will be on the prerogative of respective Schools while for the final Examinations of Class VI to IX, the Education department will announce the schedule and coordinate the conduct of examination and uploading of evaluation in the Web Portal.
DERT/MBOSE to prepare the question papers. The end date for academic session for pre-primary and for Class I to Class IX will be on 28th November, 2025 and 17th December, respectively followed by winter vacations from 18th December, 2025
The Department also directed also schools to ensure minimum 200 working days and 800 instructional hours Classes I to V while 220 working days and 1000 instructional hours for Class VI to X, which is as per the norms set by the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.
Enlightening on the Meghalaya Class Readiness Programme, the notification informed that Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) is a key initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, designed to lay a solid foundation for a child’s educational journey The performance of Meghalaya’s students in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) has been concerning, highlighting the need for improvement.
In order to alleviate the performance of the schools in the NAS, all schools are required to dedicate the first four weeks for Classes I to V, and three weeks for Classes VI to X, exclusively to enhancing learning outcomes. The necessary materials for this programme will be distributed electronically to all teachers in the state. The objective is to ensure that students, particularly those struggling, acquire the necessary competencies to progress through their classes without difficulty.
