Shullai asks Assam BJP to withdraw FIR against KSU, urge Meghalaya CM to convene all party meeting to restore peace
BJP legislator from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai has decided to seek the intervention of his counterpart in Assam for withdrawing the FIR filed against the Khasi Students Union (KSU) due to misunderstanding over the Ichamati issue.
Shullai told reporters on Saturday that he would also urge the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma to call for an all party meeting to restore peace and tranquility in the state.
“I will immediately write to Assam BJP leader and minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma and its state president Ranjit Kumar Das urging them to appeal to the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Cachar District president Amitesh Chakraborty to withdraw the FIR against the KSU,” he said.
“I will also urge them (Assam BJP) to intervene into the issue because as leaders it is our duty to douse if we see there is little spark of fire,” the MLA added.
The BJYM in Cachar District has lodged an FIR Silchar Sadar police station on Friday against the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for recently hanging banners stating that “All Bengalis in Meghalaya are Bangladeshis”.
The FIR stated that this sort of banners has created a lot of panic amongst the non-Khasi people of Meghalaya, specifically the Bengali speaking people of Meghalaya.
According to Shullai, it does not look good on the part of the BJYM to take up such action although there may be some mistake in the wordings of the banners.
Meanwhile, the BJP leader further said that he would also suggest the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma to convene an all party meeting to address the issue at the earliest.
“I will also write to the chief minister and also home minister, Lahkmen Rymbui on the need to keep the situation under control. I will also urge the chief minister to convene an all party meeting before the upcoming Assembly session to resolve and douse this fire,” he said.
The MLA also appreciated the message of peace by concerned citizens and youths from Assam in social media reminding that Assamese and Khasis are brothers and sisters.
Asked, Shullai said that the all party meeting should find ways and means to ensure peace and communal harmony is restored in the state.
