Shillong bound heroin bust worth Rs 7.2 crores; one arrested
East Jaintia Hills Police arrested one person with heroin worth Rs. 7.2 Crores at the Ratacherra Checkpoint in East Jaintia Hills on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Nehtinmang Haokip, a 36-year-old resident of M Songgel village, Churachandpur District, Manipur was arrested after a thorough search of his unregistered Mahindra pick-up truck at 8 AM on Saturday.
During the inspection, police recovered a black plastic drum of 50 litre, within which a suspicious package suspected to be contraband substances was found.
During interrogation, Haokip confessed that the illicit cargo originated from Churachandpur, Manipur intended for transportation to Shillong.
In the presence of independent witnesses, 84 soap cases, each filled with yellowish/orange powder suspected to be heroin, were recovered from the drum.
Police said, during preliminary tests confirmed the substance to be heroin. The weight and measurement were conducted on the spot using a digital weight machine, revealing the net weight of the recovered suspected heroin to be around 900 grams, with a market value of 7.2 Crores.
Haokip was promptly arrested and the contraband, along with the Bolero pick-up vehicle and a mobile phone, were seized as evidence. A case has been registered under NDPS Act.
