A joint inspection was conducted at Lum Survey following demand for eviction of illegal settlers.

The joint inspection was led by an additional magistrate and officials of the Defence Estate Office, Guwahati, Shillong Municipal Board (SMB), Shillong Cantonment Board (SCB), police and members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said, “The officials of the district administration had conducted a survey and taken note of the number of households. They found that there are more than 80 households, who are illegally settling in the land (falling under the Defence Estate Office). We are thankful to the DC for conducting the inspection before the one week deadline ended.”

“We will be waiting for the report to be submitted by the additional magistrate to the DC. Our demand through the district administration that the Defence Estate Office should take action to immediately evict these illegal settlers from the said land,” he added.

Asked, Synrem said, “We also maintain that if they fail to act against illegal settlers even after finding the fact through the field inspection today, we will be compelled to take matters into our own hands by evicting the illegal settlers and if there law and order arises, the deputy commissioner and the defence estate office will have to take full responsibility.”
