The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday conducted a hearing in regards to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed against the failure of the law enforcement agencies to take action as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 against reckless and negligent riding of two wheelers at high speed.

During the hearing, learned counsel N Syngkon has drawn the attention of the Court to the information received by an RTI application which shows that there have been 21 fatalities and 28 injuries in the period of 12 months from 30.07.2022 to 23.07.2023 due to reckless riding.

He, therefore, prayed that appropriate directions be issued to direct the traffic enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the Motor Vehicles Act and to install proper checks at strategic points to stem this menace.

It also directed that the matter be listed on February 7, 2024.
