Peace talks yield positive results in Khanduli border meeting
A breakthrough was achieved in the ongoing border disputes between the Karbi and Pnar communities during a meeting held in Khanduli on May 16.
The Suching Amring Border Development Committee (SABDC) and the residents of Khandul on both sides agree to implement an Entry Tax Gate and halt illegal encroachments along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The meeting was attended by Border Magistrates from Assam and Meghalaya, including A Laskar, Border Magistrate, West Karbi Anglong and B. Langbang, Border Magistrate, West Jaiñtia Hills.
Stricter measures were also introduced against unauthorized activities such as vegetable collection, fishing, and hunting, with fines of Rs. 50,000 for offenders.
Additionally, it was decided that Meghalaya residents owning land in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong must hold valid documentation from the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Diphu.
The decisions taken in the meeting are considered binding, signaling a significant step towards peace and stability in the region. Fieldwork is set to resume from May 21, marking a positive turn in the border situation.
