SHILLONG: Amidst the ongoing election to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), the State Government today decided to rechristen five roads in Shillong city after four prominent personalities including St Mother Teresa Road.

Informing media-persons after the cabinet meeting, Home Minister James K Sangma said the cabinet has accepted the recommendation made by the Meghalaya State Naming Authority Committee during its 24th meeting held on November last year  for renaming of roads, villages and institutions in the State.

James Sangma apprised that the road from Mawlai-Mawroh to Madan-Mawkhar under Mawlai constituency is christened as St Mother Teresa Road while in honour of two departed legislators the cabinet has decided to rechristen Howel Road in Laban as Thrang Hok J Rangad Road and the Zikzak Road as Arbendu Chaudhuri.

He also informed that the ABP Road Batti Bazar at Laban as Roland Lyngdoh Road, Sylhetipara Road at Laban as Krepsing Swer Road and Jackson Trace Road at Lower Lumparing as Melington Kharkongor Road. He added that the village Kynshiraishan will be known again as Kynshi village.

Following the footsteps of the Congress Party, the NPP National General Secretary said they have decided to rename a stadium and a road in Tura, West Garo Hills District after its former Member of Parliament and founder of the ruling National People’s Party (Late) Purno Agitok Sangma.

He pointed that the Dikkibandi Stadium (which earlier known as MP stadium) and a junction leading to AMPT road in Tura is renamed as PA Sangma Road.

The MP stadium was not official name so in 2014, the Congress government had renamed the stadium as Dikkibandi and now the NPP Govt changed it to P A Sangma Stadium, James who is the eldest son of Sangma said.
