SHILLONG: The nomination papers of two out of eight candidates for Lok Sabha election to the Shillong parliamentary constituency have been withheld after complaints were received during the scrutiny of nominations.

The two include THS Bonney of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and Justice Kharbasanti of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

According to the returning officer Abhishek Bhagotia, the nomination papers of the two candidates have been withheld.

“Notices were also issued to them before taking necessary action,” he said while informing that Bonney has been asked to submit his reply on Wednesday while Kharbasanti on Thursday.

He said a complaint against the candidature of Bonney was received from the KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon which was based on a recent order passed by the High Court, while a complaint was also received against Kharbasanti from a bank for failing to clear a bank loan.

Meanwhile, the nomination papers of six other candidates were found to be valid. These include Congress MP and candidate Vincent H Pala, his substitute candidate Kennedy C Khyriem, BJP candidate Sanbor Shullai, UDP candidate Jemino Mawthoh and two Independents – Samuel Hashah and Romeo Phira Rani.

Meanwhile for the Tura parliamentary constituency, the papers of all the three candidates including Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma, NPP candidate Agatha K Sangma and BJP candidate Rikman G Momin have been accepted.
