  • Nokma Council demands Govt to withdraw recommendation on village, municipal council for Garo Hills

    The Nokma Council has vehemently opposed and rejects the state government’s recommendation to the Centre for introduction of the village council and municipal council in the proposed Sixth Schedule Amendment Bill.   

    A statement issued on Friday said that the Council in view of the negative impact of the said two bodies on the traditional rights, powers, functions and structure of Garo local bodies has resolved to urge the Meghalaya government to totally withdraw the recommendation given to the Union government.

    “Since, the proposed introduction of the village council and municipal council shall have an effect on the traditional fabric of the Garo society, the Nokma Council and the Garo civil societies in its joint meeting on September 8, decided to take the issue to the people Garo Hills,” it said.

    In the joint meeting the Nokma Council and the Garo civil societies have unanimously resolved to convene a protest rally/public demonstrstion cum public meeting on September 6th at Nokma Council office Balading Tura.
