NEHU VC says EC approves Prasad’s appointment, invites JAC for talks
Vice Chancellor of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Prof PS Shukla on Saturday said the appointment of the technical officer cum senior consultant Rohit Prasad was made after taking the approval of the University’s Executive Council (EC).
Addressing the media, Prof Shukla said that the VC is the appointing authority for temporary appointment to all Group A/Group B posts. The appointment of Rohit Prasad is not permanent and it will also be coterminous with the vice chancellor.
“The decision (to appoint Prasad) was also made after taking the approval of the EC,” he said.
His statement came a day after the Joint Action Committee comprising NEHUTA, NEHUNSA and NEHUSU had served a 10-day ultimatum to terminate Prasad. The JAC had also demanded that salaries paid to Prasad should be recovered from the VC’s remuneration and not at all from the University’s account.
Prof Shukla however said, “Can anyone be terminated immediately? Can the administration do this without any allegation? Without any allegation or any proof how any administrator will be in a position to terminate anyone?”
“There is a procedure to it. If you have any allegation you raise the allegation, we will constitute a committee and accordingly I am ready to take a decision (on the matter),” he said.
The VC however maintained that appointment of Prasad was done as per rules and said, “NEHUTA has been pressurizing me to take a wrong decision but I am not going to take a wrong decision.”
“JAC is saying the VC is violating the rules but I am here with all papers (before you),” he said while adding that with the help of the Dean of School, the University will also constitute a committee to discuss with the JAC and find out the solution.
To a query, the VC said that he does not have any kind of hesitation to invite the JAC for talks.
“I don’t have any kind of hesitation to call them. I don’t have any kind of ego also as I am ready to call and discuss with anyone. From the first day of joining I have made it clearly I am ready to discuss from the peon to the officer level in the NEHU,” he said.
Prof Shukla also expressed concern over the tone of the letter from the NEHUTA president and said, “A letter written by the president had stated “Hi! The NEHUTA EC is not keen to meet the VC anymore on this issue. This should not be. Maybe there are some differences between the organization and the VC, come forward, sit together and discuss the matter on the basis of the Act, statutes and regulation.”
“I am ready to take the help from the teaching and non teaching but first come forward discuss the matter and help us make a decision in favour of the younger generation. This is my objective. I am spending more than 10 hours in my office to retain and regain the past glory of NEHU,” he said.
He further stated that the opposition by the teachers against the conduct of the Academic Council meeting will only affect the students and their upcoming semester examination.
Earlier, the VC had also highlighted the several activities undertaken by Prasad and said, “A technical group has developed an online system for the colleges of NEHU. We have 83 affiliated colleges and our students are facing the problem relating to marksheets. With this portal, NEHU will be in a position to solve their problem online. This is the output of this group and the mentor is Rohit Prasad. This is his contribution.”
He also announced that after a month’s time, NEHU will be in a position to provide 5G facility to the students.
According to him, the NEHU had already published advertisements for filling up 150 polus non-faculty member posts.
“Earlier, we appointed teacher posts, now we will appoint non-teaching positions. Till December or January, I will also be in position to recruit the finance officer, university engineer as well as the registrar of the university,” the VC said.
