NEHU Students Union President alleged sexual harassed by NEHU Proctor
SHILLONG: The North East Hills University Students Union (NEHUSU) today called for a mass agitation to the protest to protest against the high handiness of the NEHU Pro Vice Chancellor and Proctor of Tura Campus on Friday at 11.30 am in front of the Central Library, NEHU to express their solidarity and unity against the University higher up.
The NEHUSU will submit an ultimatum to the Vice Chancellor of NEHU to immediately withdraw the FIR and dropped the charges made against them before sundown.
Meanwhile, NEHUSU) on Thursday filed an FIR in Mawlai Police Station against the pro vice chancellor and proctor of NEHU Tura campus for making false allegations and racially abusing the leaders of the union.
The complaint was also lodged against seven labourers working at the Tura campus for allegedly indulging in eve teasing against the president of union.
In the FIR, NEHUSU president Genuica Majaw informed that the NEHUSU officials at around 1.30 pm on April 7, had gone for an evening walk in which during this time, she went ahead to tour the campus only to be eve teased by seven labourers, which has outraged her modesty.
She said later that evening at around 9:00 pm, the proctor Gino A Sangma and Pro VC of Tura Campus G Singaiah along with other faculties came to meet the NEHUSU office bearers at the Guest House.
“The proctor directly threatened us that if we venture out of the guest house in the evening then some unknown miscreants might ambush us or attack us as though he had knowledge of what will happen to us,” Majaw said.
Regarding the FIR filed against them, NEHUSU president said that an FIR was also filed against them for allegedly pelting stones at the quarter of the pro vice chancellor.
“We were not aware of such incident and we, the NEHUSU were forced to admit to the act under pressure and intimidation from the Proctor Gino A Sangma,” she said.
She said the union members were also saddened and frustrated when pro vice chancellor came to the guest house and refused to shake hands when she welcomed him by stating that “I do not want to shake the hands of your kind of people” while terming such statement to be an act of racial and gender abuse.
“The Proctor chased out the official members of the NEHUSU and ignored our plea and instructed me to stay alone as I am girl and gave me a look which aghast me. This led me to request the authorities which included some respectable female faculties who intervened in the matter to let everyone stay for the night and to evacuate the guest house the very next morning,” she said.
She said the next morning the proctor again came to the guest house and forcefully snatched the identity cards of the union members.
“When intervened to his adamant attitude he (proctor) stated to me, “If you do not give your IDs then I will be forced to take your pictures.” Then when I still refused to submit my ID, he forcefully snatched the ID from my hand thereby making physical contact with me. It was on this occasion that I, being a woman felt harassed and felt that my modesty as a women was outraged,” she said.
“All the members were hence, forced to submit their IDs of which he took pictures of them without our permission and chased us out from the guest house by sending securities for stalking and taking videos of us while leaving the Campus without our consent,” she said.
