To commemorate the 148th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Meghalaya Chief Secretary,  DP Wahlang today administered the National Unity Day pledge at the Main Secretariat building premises.

National Unity Day, observed annually on October 31st, focuses on the theme of Raigad Fort for 2024. This day honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a significant leader in India’s independence movement and the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

The day is dedicated to promoting national integration, unity, and harmony among citizens, reflecting Patel’s vision of a cohesive India. The concept of National Unity Day was initially proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a 2014 speech, and it was officially established that same year to recognize Patel’s efforts in uniting over 500 princely states into the Indian Union after independence in 1947.
