In a major step toward improving healthcare access in remote and underserved regions of Assam, MSD Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. (MSD), in collaboration with Smile Foundation, launched a new initiative featuring two mobile medical units and one boat clinic. The programme, branded MSD Smile on Wheels and MSD Smile on Boat, will serve over 25,000 people annually across 12 districts and 12 riverine islands, including Darrang, Barpeta, and South Salmara.

Each mobile and boat unit is equipped with qualified doctors, paramedical staff, diagnostic tools, and essential medicines, offering free outpatient consultations (OPD) and point-of-care services. The initiative is focused on addressing the three key challenges in rural healthcare—availability, accessibility, and affordability.

In addition to delivering primary medical care, the clinics will run awareness and Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) programs focusing on maternal health, child immunization, antenatal and postnatal care, and preventive health practices. Referrals to higher medical centres will be facilitated when necessary, and community counselling will help reduce out-of-pocket expenses while encouraging proactive health-seeking behaviour.

Rehan A. Khan, managing director of MSD India Region, said, “Improving access to healthcare is deeply embedded in MSD’s purpose. This expansion of our CSR program in Assam brings healthcare closer to the people who need it most. We are committed to enhancing community health through awareness, diagnostics, and preventive care.”

Santanu Mishra, co-founder and executive trustee of Smile Foundation, echoed the vision: “Our mission has always been to deliver development to the doorstep of underserved communities. Mobile medical units have proven effective in closing healthcare access gaps. This partnership with MSD strengthens our ability to ensure early intervention, continuity of care, and healthier lives.”

This joint initiative reaffirms MSD Pharmaceuticals and Smile Foundation’s commitment to equitable healthcare and improving health outcomes in some of Assam’s most remote and vulnerable communities.
