MNF demands resignation of Manipur CM, says Centre must act decisively
The Mizo National Front (MNF), a prominent regional party in Mizoram, has called for the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, attributing the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur to what it describes as a catastrophic failure of his leadership.
The demand was articulated by MNF general secretary for media and publicity, V.L. Krosshnehzova, in a statement issued on Thursday. Krosshnehzova highlighted the severe suffering of the “Zofate brethren” due to the ethnic conflict in Manipur, stating that the situation has reached intolerable levels. He accused Chief Minister Biren Singh of inaction and misuse of power, alleging that these factors have exacerbated the crisis and inflicted additional hardship on innocent people.
“Chief Minister Biren Singh’s inaction and misuse of power have only worsened the situation, making his continuation in office both untenable and shameful. His leadership has not only failed to resolve the crisis but has also perpetuated the suffering of innocent people. We demand that Chief Minister Biren Singh step down immediately,” Krosshnehzova stated.
The MNF also urged the Central Government to take immediate and decisive action to end the ongoing crisis, restore peace, and ensure that the people of Manipur regain their democratic rights and dignity.
According to the MNF leader, as of November 22, 2024, the violence has claimed the lives of 219 members of their ethnic community, destroyed nearly 360 churches, injured countless individuals, and displaced over 41,425 people. Additionally, over 7,000 homes and 200 villages have been reduced to ashes, leaving thousands as refugees in their own land.
Krosshnehzova expressed deep anguish over the atrocities, emphasizing that such destruction demands justice and restoration. “In a nation celebrated as the world’s largest democracy, the continued erosion of human rights and attacks on religious sanctuaries betray the foundational values of justice and secularism. That an elected government would stand idle amidst such suffering is an affront to democracy and a global embarrassment,” he said.
Highlighting the plight of the Zofate people, Krosshnehzova commended the MNF government under Chief Minister Zoramthanga for its proactive measures. He noted that the government had extended significant support to displaced individuals, including refugees from Manipur, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. The assistance has included food, shelter, and education. MNF leaders and MLAs have also personally visited Manipur to offer aid to the affected.
In a call for unity and solidarity, Krosshnehzova urged all Zofate people to stand together in protecting lives and livelihoods. “This is a time for resilience, compassion, and unwavering solidarity. We urge the people of Mizoram to continue their efforts, both individually and through organisations, to extend their support with renewed vigour,” he said.
The MNF reiterated its demand for Chief Minister Biren Singh’s resignation and called on the Central Government to take decisive action to address the ongoing crisis and uphold democratic values.
Krosshnehzova emphasized the importance of fearless advocacy and lauded Mizoram MP (Rajya Sabha) Pu K. Vanlalvena for boldly raising the plight of the Zofate community during parliamentary debates. His efforts to amplify their voices and advocate for justice have been recognized as vital in highlighting the ongoing crisis.
Krosshnehzova expressed deep gratitude to churches, voluntary organizations, and student unions in Mizoram for their selfless contributions in aiding displaced Zofate individuals. “Their tireless efforts to provide food, shelter, and care for those fleeing violence embody the spirit of humanity and the unyielding bond of the Zofate community,” he said.
He also called on the Mizoram government to persist in its commitment to supporting the displaced, urging them to fulfill their promises with integrity and patriotism. He stressed that the government’s actions should reflect the core values of justice, compassion, and unity, which define the Zofate identity.
Reaffirming the MNF’s dedication, Krosshnehzova stated, “We will wholeheartedly support any initiative by the Mizoram government that prioritizes the welfare and well-being of Zofate across the region. Let this commitment serve as a beacon of hope, ensuring that our shared values of unity, compassion, and resilience continue to guide us through these challenging times.”
