  • MHRC seeks report into attack on migrant labourers

    The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has sought action taken report by the state government into the recent attack on migrant workers in South West Khasi Hills district.

    Taking suo motu cognizance on the incident, the MHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary asking him to have the matter enquired into by the concerned Commissioner of Division and to submit its report to the Commission on the actions/steps taken by the government to apprehend the miscreants.

    The Commission has also asked the government on the measures proposed to be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future and the quantum of interim relief proposed to be granted to the deceased and the injured persons in that tragic incident.

    The Commission reminded the State of its obligation under Article 21 of the Constitution of

    India to protect and safeguard the Right to Life and the Right to Livelihood of individuals within the State. Article 21 of the Constitution mandates for protection of life and personal liberty for every person within the territory of India.
