Meghalaya’s agri success: From trial export to Doha to 20 metric tons to Dubai
The flagging off ceremony of 20 metric tons of Khasi Mandarin to Dubai marked a historic moment for Meghalaya, showcasing its rich agricultural diversity and responding to the global demand for unique and high-quality produce. Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, graced the event as the Chief Guest, emphasizing the government’s commitment to support farmers.
The ceremony, held on Monday at the Integrated Agriculture Training Centre (I.A.T.C), Upper Shillong, saw the participation of key dignitaries, including RV Lyngdoh, MLA, Mylliem Constituency and representatives from various departments and organizations.
The collaborative efforts of the Government of Meghalaya, along with partners such as APEDA, the Lulu Group, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, culminated in this significant milestone.
Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh highlighted the growth in international exports, stating, “Today we are talking of 20 MT, a substantial increase from the initial trial of 1.5 MT to 2 MT. This step assures our farmers that we will grow and benefit together. The next challenge is to promote natural farming practices and address the Organic Mission, instilling confidence in farming communities.”
Isawanda Laloo, IAS, Secretary, Department of Agriculture, emphasized the opportunity to capture the global organic consumer market, given Meghalaya’s unique agro-climatic conditions and diverse produce.
Stakeholders expressed optimism about the venture’s positive impact on farmers’ livelihoods and the overall economic development of Meghalaya. Sunita Rai, Deputy GM APEDA i/c NER, envisioned sustained commercial shipments, urging pride in local fruits.
The ceremony showcased the collaborative efforts of Meghalaya’s farmers and exporters, introducing Khasi Mandarin to international markets and strengthening trade ties with Dubai.
Ravi Kumar, Senior GM, Lulu Group International, highlighted the growth potential, anticipating increased exports in the coming years. The Khasi Mandarin is sourced from various Farmer Producer Companies (FPC)/groups across different districts, contributing to the success stories of Geographical Indication tagged Meghalaya Khasi Mandarin and Kew Pineapple in the Gulf Market.
The success stories, including the export of Lakadong Turmeric and Ginger to the European market, demonstrate Meghalaya’s dedication to agricultural excellence. With support from APEDA, the Meghalaya government previously conducted a trial export to Doha and Bahrain in the UAE.
In a strategic move, the Agriculture Marketing Board signed an MoU with the Lulu Group on November 3, 2023, aiming to promote Meghalaya’s agricultural products in GCC countries. This partnership, facilitated by APEDA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, is a crucial step towards sustainable market linkage and global expansion. The first 20 Metric Tons of Khasi Mandarin, already on its way to Dubai, signifies a significant achievement in this collaborative journey.
