Meghalaya: Two more dies of COVID-19, death toll rises to 116
The death toll in the state due to COVID-19 has increased to 116 on Thursday after two more persons have succumbed to the viral infection.
58-year-old Belnarine Laloo of Iawmusiang, Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district passed away at the Supercare hospital in Shillong while 50 year old Mingran D Sangma of Salmanpara in South West Garo Hills died at the Tura civil hospital on Wednesday, Director of Health Services (MI) Dr Aman War said.
Laloo was tested COVID positive on being admitted at the hospital at 7.20pm on Wednesday. “She later passed away and the cause of death was due to COVID pneumonia,” Dr War said.
He said Sangma was admitted at the hospital on November 13 and later was found to be COVID positive on November 23. “The cause of death was due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding with liver mass with oesophageal varices with COVID-19 infection,” he said.
The state has recorded recovery of 87 COVID-19 patients while 52 new cases were detected on Thursday.
He said the persons who recovered from the viral infection include 51 from East Khasi Hills district, 20 South Garo Hills district, 6 West Garo Hills district, 4 South West Garo Hills district, 3 West Jaintia Hills district, 2 Ri Bhoi district and 1 East Garo Hills district.
Of the 52 new cases, Dr War said 32 are from East Khasi Hills, 12 West Garo Hills, 4 Ri Bhoi, 3 West Jaintia Hills and 1 West Khasi Hills.
So far, the state has detected a total of 12,005 COVID-19 cases out of which 648 are active cases, 11,241 recovered and 116 deaths.
Dr War said the fatality rate due to COVID-19 is 0.96 percent.
Of the total active cases, East Khasi Hills has 367 positive cases, West Garo Hills 156, Ri Bhoi 32, East Garo Hills 27, West Jaintia Hills 19, South West Garo Hills 18, West Khasi Hills 9, North Garo Hills 7, East Jaintia Hills 5, South Garo Hills 6, and South West Khasi Hills 2.
“Till date, swab samples of 2,47,928 persons have been tested of which 2,35,923 were found negative,” the senior medical official said.
There are 66,753 entrants from outside the state.
