Meghalaya pays homage to police martyrs
The state police on Wednesday paid rich homage to the sacrifice made by the police martyrs.
Wreaths were placed at every memorial site in each district headquarter, and the names of police martyrs were read out during the ceremony to mark the Police Commemoration Day.
“In our efforts to ensure peace and tranquility within the state, the department has lost many valiant officers and personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty,” Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) GK Iangrai said.
He said a total of 127 officers and personnel had sacrificed their lives in serving the state fighting various anti-social elements which were motivated to impede peace and progress of the state.
He said these courageous officers and personnel bravely and heroically faced the vicious actions of the enemy in order to defend the honour of the state and in the course of doing so had to made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Their gallant deeds, fearlessness, fortitude and sacrificed has unequivocally contributed towards prevailing peace and prosperity of the state and to in recognition of their indomitable act, most of the martyrs of the department have been awarded with the highest gallantry award – Ashoka Chakra, Kriti Chakra, Police Medal for Gallantry, Meghalaya Governor’s Police Medal for Outstanding Service, and other notable awards.
