Minister in-charge Labour Sanbor Shullai has requested the Centre to consider a special economic package for the unorganized workers in Meghalaya.

In a letter submitted to the Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bhupendra Yadav on Friday, Shullai said, “I request your esteemed self to consider a special economic package for the unorganized workers…registered under the NDUW portal as a mark of appreciation and goodwill gesture by your Ministry on the Golden Jubilee occasion of Meghalaya statehood.”

Shullai also urged the union minister for allocation of funds, guidance and handholding in executing all the developmental schemes initiated by the ministry for the welfare and immediate benefit of all the workers and labourers in Meghalaya.

The BJP legislator from South Shillong further informed that although economic resources are limited, the people in Meghalaya are hardworking and predominantly confined to unorganized sectors such as domestic workers, home-based workers, self-employed workers or wage workers, taxi drivers, vegetable and fruit sellers etc.

He said that as per the Supreme Court judgment dated 29th June 2021, the Ministry has created the national data on unorganized workers (NDUW) portal for online registration of the unorganized workers/ labourers for seeking help from the Central government.

Shullai assured that his department will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the maximum number of unorganized workers/labourers are registered on the NDUW online portal.

“We are also encouraging the unorganized workers/ labourers to obtain an Aadhaar card and open a bank account linked to a mobile number for successful online registration.

We will be educating the unorganized workers/labourers about the benefits of JAM (Jan Dhan Yojana bank account,Aadhar Card and Mobile phone linked to the bank account) which is introduced by the Govt. of India to facilitate Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to all the eligible unorganized workers/ labourers. In this regard,” he added.
