Meghalaya education minister expresses concern over low enrolment of students in primary schools
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Monday expressed concern over the low enrolment of students in primary schools.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said, “It is very alarming in the state that primary school enrolment has come down drastically.”
He said as per data from the ministry, Meghalaya has 168 primary schools and 101 upper primary schools, which are having less than 10 students enrolment.
Sangma said that closing down such schools may not be the solution. He said that the state government will take steps after verifying the data.
“Schools having less enrolment is a matter of concern and it really is a challenge and we have to take teachers and management on board,” he said.
He added, “We will take appropriate steps to verify the reasons and the issues and we will send all officers to verify this.”
The education minister also stressed the need for the government to take steps to bring the schools across the state to a better standard.
