Meghalaya cabinet approves draft St Xavier’s University Bill, 2020
The state Cabinet on Wednesday approved the draft St Xavier’s University Bill, 2020.
Addressing media persons, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said after detailed discussion, the cabinet has approved the draft Bill, which will be placed in the autumn session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for consideration.
He said the university will have to comply with all the conditions laid down in the Bill once it becomes an Act after passing in the Assembly.
On the location for setting up the university, Tynsong however said that is too early to say but the institution will set up its headquarters in the state.
Admitting that there are private universities, which are functioning from rented premises, the deputy chief minister said the government has constituted the Meghalaya Private University Regulatory Board (MPURB) to look into such issues.
He said the application of the St Xavier’s University was also sent to the regulatory board, which has strongly recommended that the draft Bill be considered in the Assembly.
Tynsong said the regulatory board was put in place after the state had faced some problems with the CMJ University.
“We learned through our mistakes as we have seen quite a number of these so called private universities they did nothing so we will not allow these kind of things to happen (again),” he said.
Tynsong also assured that the St Xavier’s University is one of the famous institutions throughout the country having its campuses at Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati, Assam.
