Power Minister AT Mondal on Tuesday informed that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) will replace electric poles, which are in a very bad condition, across the state.

Speaking to reporters, Mondal said that the process is continuous.

He also informed that the corporation has also considered changing the traditional bare conductor to aerial bundled conductors (ABC) and covered conductors to ensure safety, reliability and aesthetic.

According to Mondal, measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the people.

Asked, the minister said, “We are prepared. It is not that the monsoon will come, we will be prepared. Recently, there was a storm in parts of Garo Hills. It has disrupted many of our poles and all these things; we have taken care of it. Even last year, when the cyclone remal came, it destroyed our lines but we have restored in the fastest way we can. We are in a position to see but it also depends on the nature and the extent of the damage.”

“If monsoon is there, we are happy. If the monsoon is not there then tension comes. This time there was no rain till April first week. Usually we experience rain during February March but this time it is not there but nevertheless we are prepared as there won’t be any scheduled load shedding and we are thankful to God that this rain has come and we try to tap maximum opportunity from this situation,” he added.
