KSU shuts down offices, banks for not respecting death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem
SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Wednesday shut down government offices, banks and educational institutions in Khasi and Jaintia Hills region after they were found functioning on the occasion of the 184th death anniversary of a legendary freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem.
These institutions and offices had remained open despite the occasion being declared as a holiday by the state government.
On being informed, KSU activists in the different districts of the state immediately went and shut down such institutions and offices.
These include the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Umiam and University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in Ri Bhoi District. The USTM has also agreed to give holiday to the students.
KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah said the Food Corporation of India (FCI) which is having its regional office at Mawlai and a BSNL Customer Service Centre at NEHU were also closed down for failing to respect the occasion.
He said on receiving information, police from the Mawlai police station also reached the spot and tried to stop the members from shutting down the FCI office.
In the two districts of Jaintia Hills, Thabah said the office of the Superintendent of Customs at Tamabil, Dawki and the State Bank of India (SBI) at Khliehriat were also closed down by the members.
