SHILLONG: On the occasion of observing the Khasi National Awakening Day, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has distributed pamphlets across Shillong and other parts of Khasi-Jaintia Hills region to make people aware about the objective of this important day.
“We want to remind our indigenous people on the significant of this day, a day when our freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem had raised a battle against the British government,” KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar said.
He said the day is also a reminder on the need to preserve and protect our land land and its people.
“The KSU therefore reiterated its stand to continue its struggle for the cause of the indigenous community,” Marngar said.
It may be mentioned here, it was on the 4th of April, 1829 when the legendary Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem had raised the battle cry against the invasive British forces but was eventually captured and defeated. He died in Dhaka on July 17, 1835.
