KHNAM slams NEIGRIHMS for biased approach against ST in Meghalaya
SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement has slammed the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) for allegedly adopting a “biased approach” towards the scheduled tribe in the state.
Seeking the state government’s immediate intervention into the matter, the party has demanded to increase the number of reserved seats for the ST category in order to address the growing unemployment problem faced by the tribal youth.
This came following the recent notification issued by the NEIGRIHMS for direct recruitment of 264 number of Group B & C post which includes Nursing Officer/Technical Assistant/Pharmacist/Health Educator.
As per the notification, the reservation made is 34 numbers for SC, 17 for ST, 62 for OBC, 23 for EWS and 95 as unreserved.
In a memorandum submitted to the health minister AL Hek here on Friday, KHNAM state youth wing president Thomas Passah has expressed strong protest against the biased approach of the NEIGRIHMS while making the reservation.
“It is to be noted that Meghalaya is a tribal state, which most of the youth belonging to ST category, however, the least number of seats is allotted to the ST, whereas, Schedule Cast and Other Backward Class were allotted 34 and 62 number of reserved seats respectively,” he said.
“…for the welfare of the unemployed youth of the state, since the state of Meghalaya is largely a Tribal dominant state, we suggest that the number of reserved seats from SC and OBC be reduced and add up to the reserved number of ST so that it goes up to a total number of 70 at the least,” Passah demanded.
