KHADC alleges Assam govt of disrespecting status quo by inaugurating stadium at Umlaper
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has asked the state government to intervene into the alleged failure of the Assam government to respect status quo by inaugurating a stadium at Umlaper village, Block II in Ri Bhoi District, which is one of the areas of difference.
The stadium was inaugurated by Horensing Bey, MP of Karbi Anglong, Assam on Thursday in the presence of Boithalangso MLA Rupsing Teron and EM KAAC Pardeep Rongpi. The incident was informed by Congress MDC from Mawhati Charles Marngar.
“I urge the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the state government to immediately take necessary action on the matter,” KHADC chief executive member Titosstar Well Chyne said in a statement issued here.
Chyne also informed that he has decided to soon convene an emergent meeting with the MDCs and traditional heads from the region. “We will also immediately summon the Syiem of Raid Nongtung as we have to take a call on this action by the Assam government,” he added.
The KHADC chief further reminded that Umlaper village is one of the areas of difference which both Assam and Meghalaya are in the process of finding an amicable solution to resolve the long pending issue.
He also recalled that during the last meeting held between the Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner RM Kurbah and West Karbi Anglong district deputy commissioner, they had decided to further maintain the status quo.
“Since talks are going on, there should not be any construction or inauguration of any projects (in such areas of difference). However, the action by the Assam government only shows that they fail to respect the status quo and moreover it exposed the double standard attitude of their leadership,” Chyne said.
