Jiribam violence: NIA to probe 3 cases of rape, murder and arson
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation of three major cases related to the recent violence in Jiribam district of Manipur, including the abduction and killing of six women and children, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The MHA decided to hand over these cases to the NIA due to the seriousness of the offenses and the escalating violence in the state. The NIA re-registered the cases on November 13.
The first case FIR No. 29(11) originally registered at Borobekra Police Station on November 11, in which militants set fire to several houses and shops in the area of Jakuradhor Karong, located near Borobekra Police Station. In the subsequent exchange of fire between the militants and security forces (including CRPF personnel), two civilians were killed.
Later, six people (three women and three children) were abducted and murdered by the militants.
The NIA is also investigating two other major incidents linked to the ongoing violence in the state.
The agency’s involvement aims to uncover the larger conspiracy behind these brutal attacks and ensure a thorough investigation into the escalating violence in Manipur. The state has been grappling with increased unrest and militant activity, making the intervention of the NIA crucial in the pursuit of justice.
The NIA also registered another case related to November 11 incident in which armed militants attacked a CRPF post located at Jakuradhor Karong and the Borobekra police station. In the attack, a CRPF constable was injured by gunfire and was evacuated for medical treatment to Silchar.
During searches by security forces and the police, the bodies of unidentified militants were recovered, along with arms and ammunition found near the scene of the attack.
The initial case was registered under FIR No. 30(11) at Borobekra PS, which has now been taken over by the NIA.
The central agency has re-registered a third case related to the violence in Jiribam district, which involves the brutal murder of a woman by armed militants on November 7. 31-year-old Zosangkim, a woman from Jairolpokpi (Zairawn) in Jiribam, was brutally raped and burnt alive by fully armed militants at her residence. She was the wife of Ngurthansang and the mother of three children.
The case was initially registered as FIR No. 80(11)2024 at Jiribam Police Station on November 8.
The NIA has re-registered the case as RC-13/2024/NIA/IMP under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the Arms Act, 1959, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act).
The NIA teams visited the site of the incident on November 21 and 22 to begin their probe. The process of handing over the case documents from the local police to the NIA is currently underway.
