JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has warned of taking stern action against the cement factories operating in East Jaintia Hills District for violating the Council’s rules.

The warning was issued after an inspection was conducted by the executive committee led by its chief executive member (CEM) Thombor Shiwat to the different cement plants here on Tuesday.

The CEM was accompanied by Lasky Rymbai EM in charge Forest, Winning Garland Sungoh EM incharge Taxation, Secretary to the Executive Committee R Phawa, Joint Secretary S Passah, CFO F Blah and other officials.

After the inspection, Shiwat told reporters that the executive committee has found that most of the cement plants have failed to respect the rules of the Council in respect to mining of limestone.

He said the supply of coal and other raw materials to these cement plants was also done without following proper procedures.

“In view of this, we have decided to issue strict warning against these cement plants that they should adhere to the rules while operating in the jurisdiction of the Council,” the CEM said.

Shiwat said the executive committee has also decided to set up a monitoring gate in all the cement plants to ensure they comply with the rules.

Executive member in charge Taxation Winning Garland Sungoh however slammed the cement plants for engaging non-tribal employees without obtaining the Non-tribal employee service license from the Council.

“It is very sad to see that the provisions of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Trading by Non-Tribal Rules, 2015 has been disrespected by these cement plants,” he said.

On the other hand, Sungoh has also directed the cement plants to submit report on the number of employees who are working illegally without any valid documents.
