IMD issues heavy rainfall warning in Meghalaya
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Meghalaya on 27th and 28th May 2024. This warning follows the development of a depression over the central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm.
The depression is moving northeast at 20 kmph and is currently centered near latitude 15.5°N and longitude 88.7°E, approximately 730 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh) and 750 km south of Canning (West Bengal).
It is forecast to become a cyclonic storm by the morning of 25th May and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the night of 25th May.
The storm is projected to cross the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara around midnight on 26th May.
Rainfall Forecast for Meghalaya:
25 May: Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills.
26 May: Moderate rainfall in most areas, with heavy rainfall in East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected.
27 May: Widespread moderate rainfall with squally winds (50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph) in southern Meghalaya. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated across the state.
28 May: Widespread moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds (30-40 kmph) and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across most parts of Meghalaya.
