The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday demanded the setting up of checkpoints/nakas within the jurisdiction of Shella police station in East Khasi Hills District following alleged increased of illegal infiltration into India by Bangladeshi through the porous Indo-Bangla border.

HYC president Roykupar Synrem in a letter to the SP of East Khasi Hills said, there is need for setting up of check-points/nakas at the earliest within the  jurisdiction of Shella Police Station in particular and within Sohra Civil Sub-Division in general, giving its proximity to the Indo-Bangla Border.

He asserted that such Check-Points/Nakas should be manned 24×7 and be put up in such strategic locations within the Sub-Division as deemed fit by the Police department.

“It is also requested that certain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) be made for the police personnel manning these Check-Points/Nakas to ensure vigilant checking to detect such illegal Bangladeshi nationals and curb the cross-border crimes through systematic inspection of individuals, vehicles and collection of evidence including digital evidence,” Synrem stated.

He alleged that the illegal infiltration into India by Bangladeshis have been reported to have increased in the last few months and especially during night time through multiple locations.

It is also reported to us that illegal cross border trades are thriving in the area and as such these illegal infiltrators may be using the routes and vehicles involved in these illegal trading activities and with the help of some local ‘Dalals’ who facilitate such infiltration.

As per our knowledge and information, there are no designated check-points/nakas in major roads connecting Shella and other border villages to Sohra and Shillong, within the jurisdiction of Shella P.S. to detect the illegal Bangladeshi nationals and curb the cross-border illegal activities, he said while adding that on numerous occasions, it is the general public and members of our organisation who are assisting the police by apprehending such doubtful persons and hand them over to the police.
