SHILLONG: The new hundred-bedded maternity and children hospital at Jowai, West Jaiñtia Hills District is yet to be made functional despite of its construction having been completed since 2017.

It may be mentioned here that the work for construction of the hospital started on May 30, 2014 and it was completed after three years on December 15, 2017.

The total expenditure for the construction of the hospital including equipment and furniture cost was at Rs 18,46,00,000.

The issue on the delay in making the maternity and children hospital functional also came up during the just concluded budget session of the Meghalaya Assembly but the question tabled on this regard got lapsed due to the absence of the Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla.

However in his reply, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek said that as of now, appointment of the staff of the hospital has not been made as the proposal for creation of the post is yet to be sanctioned.

According to him, the government will inaugurate the 100 bedded maternity and children hospital as and when the posts are created.
