Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said deployment of police forces from the campus of the North Eastern Hill University has been withdrawn last night after taking stock of the situation.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said, “We have already withdrawn the police forces last night after taking stock of the situation and after discussion with the in-charge of the NEHU campus.”

NEHUSU has announced an indefinite suspension of classes and organized a protest rally and signature campaign against the arrest of its president Sandy Sohtun and ‘unprecedented’ deployment of armed police following the recent assault case on an assistant professor in the university’s Hindi department Dr Alok Singh.

Students were criticizing the police department for deploying its personnel without the consent of the authorities of the university.

When sought for his comment, Tynsong  however said that it is not necessary for the police to seek permission for entering premises of different central or state government institutes because it all depends on the situation.

“Well you see it is not necessary to seek permission in case if the situation arises that we have to take care of the situation. So I don’t see any prior permission to be given by the concerned authority and you know well that the government is concerned very well about the safety and security of everyone especially the students, the teachers and everybody. Therefore, I should not say that we need a prior permission entry into anywhere be it the locality or be it in the premises of the different agencies central or state government so it depends on the situation,” he added.

Meanwhile, the deputy chief minister urged the students’ community to allow investigation into the recent assault incident on a teacher to complete.

“…we have already sent the message very clearly – see we picked up the president of NEHUSU on the basis of the FIR. So, allow the investigation to complete and once that is done as ultimately they are free to go to the court and the court will ultimately take the final consideration whether to grant bail or not to grant bail. So, I request the students’ community to kindly allow the investigation to complete,” he said.

Urging the students to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, Tynsong said, “…we cannot just take the law and order in our own hands as you know if it is true as per the FIR that the professor was beaten up by the president or by anybody so I personally feel we have to make sure that everybody who are here in Meghalaya they are safe be it lecturer or faculty from outside the state doing business or doing some office services over here everybody has to be safe.”

“From that angle, the government has already taken stock of the situation and I would once again request the students’ community to bear with us and allow the law to take its own course and once that investigation process is completed, the court will take over,” he added.
