Govt to implement recommendations of inquiry commission
SHILLONG: The state Cabinet has directed the police department to initiate action on the recommendations made by the Judicial Inquiry Commission probing into the March 6, 2017-police firing at three villagers in Resubelpara, North Garo Hills District.
The Commission headed by former Judge of Guahati High Court B Agarwal has suggested a slew of measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
It has recommended that injured Milseng Sangma be given compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh, while the other two Tubal Sangma and Janrak Sangma who received minor injuries will get Rs 1 lakh each.
Justice Agarwal (Retd) also recommended automation of check gates because it was found that most of the police check gates were being operated manually.
The Commission also stated that the police department should adopt modern technologies, high resolution search lights, and using spike strips instead of firing gunshots to deflate the tyres of the vehicles which resulted in injuries.
It further stressed on the need for sensitization programme on human rights for police force besides skill development training programme to improve their efficiencies.
Speaking to reporters after cabinet meeting held here on Tuesday, Home Minister James K Sangma said on the recommendations spelled out the state government has proposed to take necessary actions which include payment of ex-gratia to the victims.
“The police department is also asked to initiate action on the recommendations of the commission,” Sangma said.
He said it was agreed to improve school syllabus on human rights for which the education department is of the view that human rights must be part of the syllabus and the curriculum framework will be notified soon.
The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission will also be requested to hold awareness camp in the state regularly.
