Govt to examine feasibility of land for development of new landfill: Dohling
SHILLONG: The state government will be examining the feasibility of certain localions where stakeholders are willing to support the move for the proposed development of a new landfill.
Talking to media persons here on Thursday, Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling said that the government is trying hard to get a new land keeping in mind that the existing dumping ground at Marten will become exhausted after 10 years from now.
He however lamented that people are not willing to give their land in most of the sites that have been identified and inspection conducted earlier.
It may be mentioned here that the move to shift Marten to Umlaiteng village was recently opposed by residents and NGOs, who demanded the government to cancel its decision on this regard.
Stating that the department is not losing hope, the minister informed that there are some communities who are willing to give their land.
“However, we will send our officials to examine the proposals and assess the feasibility of the land, provided we get the No-objection certificate from the traditional institutions,” Dohling said.
Asked, he said, “We do not want to spell out who are they but we will examine and if it is feasible, we will go ahead and if not, we will not waste our time.”
