The state government has expressed keen interest in construction more eco-friendly crematoriums across the state.

Replying to a supplementary raised by Mawphlang MLA, SK Sunn in the Assembly on Monday, Forest and Environment Minister James K Sangma said, “We are very much keen to ensure more eco-friendly crematorium are put up in the different parts of the state.”

Sangma however said that construction of the crematorium is subjected as per availability of funds. “If funds are available, we will definitely consider,” he assured.

The minister informed that so far, the state government has supported the construction of as many as 26 eco-friendly crematoriums across the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills region of the state.

This was after an agreement was entered with the Seinraij Jowai to share the design regarding the eco-friendly crematorium invented by (L) Kambel Shullai.

The minister also admitted that the eco-friendly crematorium has many benefits.

Sunn wanted to know if the government machinery has timely intervene into hurdles faced like non-issuance of no-while construction of crematoriums across the state.

According to him, cremation of mortal remains of the death is the religious practice of the community believing in the indigenous faith and it is injustice for them to approach the court of law for construction of crematoriums in their own state.

Regarding this, the minister has assured to look into the matter.

“As a government we are not bias and for us all religious are equal. If there are grievances in terms of land and NOC, we will look into it,” he added.
