Government to spend Rs 40 crores for Skills Development; Youth Portal launched

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stressed that skilling is a very important aspect of the Government of India’s programme as well as for the Government of Meghalaya also and the Government has been focusing on ensuring that we are able to create employment and livelihood for the youth of the state at all levels.
Speaking at the Skillerate Connect at the State Central Library, he said, “I’m happy to announce and inform you that we will be spending 40 crores from the government’s budget to help this program succeed, which means that none of you have to spend a single rupee to train or to get training. This training will be provided free by the government of Meghalaya, you only have to take the initiative through a mobile app now where you will be able to then choose the programs you want and you’ll be able to connect to the local training providers- 75 of whom will be in empaneled today and will be giving them some sort of a certificate to empanel them.”
Turning to the data of the youth population of the state, on an average the state has approximately 70,000 youth who are joining the workforce in Meghalaya every year, which means in a matter of 10 years the state will have roughly 7 lakh youth who are employable and are in that age group where they can be in the workforce.
He said, “Hence, it is a huge challenge for the Government of Meghalaya to be able to create 70,000 job opportunities every year.”
The CM recalled that the Skills Meghalaya programmes started off with a very small number because it was the initial stage and said, “From a mere 3,000 people in the beginning which we started off, today our target is to touch 1,20,000 youths in the next four years and in the next one year itself we will be training 22,000 youths.”
As for the local training providers, the CM said that it becomes an employment opportunity because government will give them money to not only train the youth, but the government will also set up the training centers.
He said, “The government of Meghalaya is also going to support the local training providers who will be training our youths to get the necessary infrastructure.”
Sangma said that machines are available to make broomsticks, in fact we’ll be happy to know and this is again for the knowledge of our youth who are out here, that Meghalaya produces 1,000 crores worth of broomsticks every year and there’s an opportunity of close to 2,000 crores of revenue being added to the economy of the state to the GDP of the state and more importantly revenue and business opportunity to the youth to the farmers and to entrepreneurs who may want to manufacture broomsticks and then further sell it after adding value to it.
On the other hand, Sangma said that the government of Meghalaya is going to give special attention to the differently abled citizens of the state to give special attention to them in terms of starting their own business.
Youth Portal
The CM launched the youth portal where the youth can through the different skills and different providers who would be available in which they can choose the skill program they like to have.
He said, “Slowly and steadily, we would like to put in a blockchain technology system where a coupon will be given to the youth to enable them to use the coupons to give the service providers who can in turn recover the money from the government. This is the beginning to ensure to make the portal accessible, and allowing the youth to now choose what skills they would like to learn.”
