Gender Resource Centre inaugurated in Bongaigaon, to empower women in Assam
In a significant move to promote women’s rights and address gender-based violence, a Gender Resource Centre (GRC) was inaugurated under the Dangtol Development Block as part of the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ASRLM), under the Department of Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD), in Bongaigaon on Tuesday.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by prominent dignitaries, including the District Commissioner, the CEO of Bongaigaon Zilla Parishad, the District Project Manager of ASRLM, and the Block Development Officer of Dangtol Block, among others.
The Gender Resource Centre has been established as a safe and supportive space for women who are victims of violence or have faced deprivation of their rights. It is dedicated to empowering women by providing access to justice, assistance, and resources. The GRC will work in collaboration with various line departments to offer legal, psychological, and social support to women in need, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing issues of gender equity and justice in the region.
During the inauguration, Bongaigaon District Commissioner emphasized the centre’s critical role in addressing the challenges faced by women in rural areas, particularly issues like domestic violence, exploitation, and gender discrimination. “The Gender Resource Centre will play a crucial role in ensuring that women who have suffered violence or discrimination are given the support they need to seek justice and improve their lives,” the District Commissioner stated.
The CEO of Zilla Parishad underscored the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment in fostering an inclusive and progressive society. “This initiative is a part of our ongoing efforts to create a safe and supportive environment for women, where they can voice their concerns and get help from relevant authorities,” the CEO remarked.
The GRC aims to provide comprehensive support services, including legal aid, counselling, awareness programs, and vocational training, to improve the overall well-being of women. It will also act as a coordination hub, working closely with law enforcement agencies, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to ensure that women are protected and empowered. By facilitating access to justice and creating avenues for personal and professional growth, the centre is set to make a meaningful impact on the lives of women in the region.
