The Shillong-Jowai Road in West Jaintia Hills has been witnessing frequent traffic jams, particularly in the Wahmynsoo and Mookyndur areas.

The Superintendent of Police reported that the primary cause of these traffic disruptions is the breakdown of goods-laden vehicles along the route.

However, the situation is further worsened by Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) drivers who disregard lane discipline by overtaking and occupying the entire road. “When vehicles from the opposite direction follow suit, it leads to a complete gridlock,” the SP explained, highlighting that such incidents result in hours-long delays, causing serious inconvenience to passengers, especially those traveling for emergencies or medical reasons.

The police have issued a public appeal urging all motorists to adhere strictly to lane discipline and cooperate with traffic personnel to ensure quicker clearance of traffic jams. “Henceforth, any motorist found violating lane discipline during these incidents will face strict and immediate penalties,” the SP stated.

Authorities are calling for public cooperation to help maintain smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow on the Shillong-Jowai Road.
