The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Monday demanded the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) to stop conducting the public hearing for setting up of the cement plant by the M/s Meghatop Cement Private Limited at Wahiajer Narpuh, East Jaintia Hills.

In a letter to MSPCB member secretary, the FKJGP East Jaintia Hills District president Deihok Sumer said that the organization strongly opposed the holding of the public hearing on October 18.

“(We) strongly oppose and protest the implementation of a new integrated cement plant of capacity 3.3 MTPA clinker, 2.8 MTPA cement and 16 MW waste heat recovery system Wahiajer Narpuh, East JAintia Hills District based on the following points and objections – the implementation of the new cement plant affects the environment as many cement plants already set up in the district. The cement plant already affected the drinking water resources, rivers and fish living in water of the area, which the waste that came out from the cement plants and moreover the public faced a lot of scarcity of water. The public already witnessed and experienced the air pollution and dust that they breathe and also experienced the extreme heat in the past few years due to the existence of the various plants and factories,” he said.

He said that the board should consider stopping holding of the public hearing at Wahiajer Narpuh.
