East Jaintia Hills District successfully conducts earthquake and landslide mock exercise
The East Jaintia Hills District, as part of a statewide Mock Exercise on Earthquake and Landslide organized organized by the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) successfully carried out the Mock Exercise on Thursday.,
The exercise included multiple affected sites include residential areas under Khliehriat West Village, office of the Block Development Officer, Khliehriat, Khliehriat Presbyterian Secondary School, Khliehriat, Civil Hospital, Khliehriat, 1 India Family Mart, Khliehriat, Sein Raij L.P School, Moolyngkut and Meghalaya Cements Ltd, Thangskai while the Staging Area of the exercise was at the playground of Khliehriat Higher Secondary School, Khliehriat.
The whole exercise was conducted as per the Incident Response System (IRS) and all the Incident Response Teams comprising the Operations, Planning and Logistic Sections were activated and they performed their roles accordingly.
The whole exercise of evacuation, search and rescue of persons trapped inside the buildings and provision of first aid treatment before being shifted by ambulances to health care facilities witnessed the active participation of Line Departments, Police, Fire & Emergency Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards, Medical and Health Team, Community members, Volunteers, NSS units from Jaintia Eastern College, Khliehriat and Don Bosco College, Byndihati respectively and others.
After the Mock Exercise, a debriefing session with all the districts was held through video conferencing during which an evaluation on the performance of the exercise and gaps for improvement in future such exercises were discussed.
It may be mentioned that the aims and objectives of the mock exercise are to review the Disaster Management Plan of the district, to highlight the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders as per the IRS, to enhance coordination among Emergency Support Functions (ESF) at district level as also to generate public awareness through involvement of community members
