In a heartfelt ceremony commemorating World Social Work Day, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) recognized Dr. Carmo Noronha, secretary of Bethany Society, Shillong, with the Social Work Excellence Award 2025. The event, held on Tuesday, celebrated his decades-long contribution to inclusive education, empowerment of persons with disabilities, and sustainable community development.

The award was formally presented by Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM, before a hall of students, faculty, and dignitaries. Dr. Noronha’s work, rooted in the belief that inclusive growth is possible with the right support systems, has consistently delivered real-world impact — from digital literacy initiatives for the visually impaired to sustainable agriculture programs benefiting rural communities.

Dr. Noronha, also a national awardee for his work with persons with disabilities, accepted the honour with humility, giving credit to his team and colleagues. He highlighted the ongoing work of Bethany Society under the leadership of Bertha Dkhar, and shared a powerful message with students: “We human beings can become pearls if we get the right environment to grow.”

His words resonated with the audience, offering both inspiration and a challenge to future social workers: create environments where everyone can thrive.

The event also featured a keynote address by Prof. B.P. Sahu, Dean, Department of Education at NEHU Shillong, who spoke on the evolution of social work as a profession in India. His talk highlighted the importance of intergenerational dialogue and community-based interventions in shaping social justice movements today.

As part of the celebration, a wall magazine-themed “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing” was inaugurated at the Department of Social Work. Curated by students, the exhibit reflected diverse perspectives on bridging generational gaps and fostering inclusive progress.

The program began with a welcome address by Prof. G.D. Sharma and introductory remarks by Prof. R.K. Sharma, Adviser to USTM. Dr. Nibedita Paul, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work, delivered the vote of thanks, closing the event with a call for continued commitment to empathy-driven innovation in the field.

The 2025 edition of the USTM Social Work Excellence Award was more than a tribute — it was a reminder of the power of purpose-driven work. Dr. Noronha’s legacy and ongoing efforts underscore what social work can achieve when compassion meets strategy. For the students of USTM, it was both a celebration and a challenge: to step forward, engage with real issues, and make lasting change.
