Dkhar elected as new leader of KHADC, Syiem as new chairman
SHILLONG: UDP leader Teinwell Dkhar and NPP leader Pynshngainlang N Syiem on Thursday were elected unopposed as the new chief executive member and chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
This was following the decision of the opposition Congress not to contest the elections for the two coveted posts.
Members from both the ruling and opposition also felicitated the two leaders as they expressed confidence on the leadership of the new CEM while urging the newly elected chairman of the House to be neutral.
Speaking on the occasion after being elected as new KHADC chief, Teinwell Dkhar while asserting the importance of making the Council strong assured, “I will try my level best to streamline the Council from within so that when we go out and fight, we have to ensure that we win.”
He said, “I am not a perfect human being and I urged you (members) to point out my shortcomings, I am open to suggestions but they should be constructive otherwise I will not accept (your suggestions).”
The opposition Congress has earlier termed the leaders of the UDP as “expiry date” while taking a jibe at the latter’s decision to make the CEM’s post on rotation basis thereby giving Teinwell Dkhar to be in the position for only one year.
Defending his party’s decision, Teinwell however said, “You don’t need 3 years but only six months to prove your capability to lead.”
Urging the members not to judge his ability from that aspect, the newly elected KHADC chief said, “I need the support and cooperation of all the members to work for the interest of the Council.”
